Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA)
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is a department of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) that is responsible for managing the global coordination of the Internet’s unique identifiers. These unique identifiers include domain names, IP addresses, and protocol port and parameter numbers.
The IANA is responsible for maintaining the root zone of the Domain Name System (DNS), which is the hierarchical and decentralized naming system used to translate domain names into IP addresses.
The IANA also manages the allocation of IP address blocks to Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), which in turn allocate them to Internet service providers and other organizations.
In addition, the IANA maintains registries of protocol port numbers and parameters used in various Internet protocols, such as the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the User Datagram Protocol (UDP).
Overall, the IANA plays a critical role in ensuring the stable and secure operation of the global Internet by managing these unique identifiers and coordinating their use across the Internet’s infrastructure.
Which are the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs)
There are five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) that are responsible for the allocation and management of IP address blocks within their respective regions. These RIRs are:
- American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) – responsible for the allocation and management of IP address blocks in North America and parts of the Caribbean.
- Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) – responsible for the allocation and management of IP address blocks in Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia.
- Asia-Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) – responsible for the allocation and management of IP address blocks in the Asia-Pacific region.
- Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC) – responsible for the allocation and management of IP address blocks in Latin America and parts of the Caribbean.
- African Network Information Centre (AFRINIC) – responsible for the allocation and management of IP address blocks in Africa.
Each RIR operates independently but follows a set of policies and procedures developed through a bottom-up, community-driven process. These policies and procedures ensure the fair and efficient allocation and management of IP address blocks within each region.
