What is My IP Address
Your IP address is a unique string of decimal numbers that identifies your computer on the internet or on a Local Area Network. The tool above will show details about your public Internet IP address (not your local private IP).
Public vs Private IP Address
A public IP address is one that is accessible to anyone who is connected to the Internet. A private IP address is one that is only accessible to the specific computer or network that is assigned it.
A public IP address is unique in the whole Internet. This means that nobody else has the same IP address as yours.
On the other hand, a private IP address is only unique in the local area network you are connected to. It usually belongs in the same range assigned to private IPs such as 10.0.0.0, 192.168.0.0 etc.
IP Address Assignment
There are a few ways to assign an IP address to a network interface.
Some common methods include:
DHCP
The most common way to assign an IP address using DHCP is to use a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. A DHCP server provides a list of available IP addresses and allows clients to automatically request and receive IP addresses from the server.
Static IP
A static IP address is a single address that is assigned to a network interface. Static IP addresses can be configured manually by the administrator of the network.
DHCP Relay
A DHCP relay service is a network device that relays DHCP requests from DHCP servers to network interfaces. DHCP relay services can be used to assign IP addresses to remote hosts that don’t have a local DHCP server in their own network.
How to Hide My IP Address
There is no built-in way to hide your device’s IP address without resorting to third-party tools or other services online. However, many users find that using a virtual private network (VPN) or proxy service can help to anonymize their device’s online activity and protect their privacy. A VPN service or proxy replaces your own public IP address with their own IP so basically it hides your IP address behind theirs.
